Steve Smith is Chef Patron of the Freemason at Wiswell, a stylish yet relaxed country pub that offers a touch of gastronomic refinement and was named AA Restaurant of the Year for England in 2017.
Steve cooks to make people happy. Although he loves experimenting with different flavours and techniques, especially Japanese and Asian cuisines, his customers always come first. He describes his pub as a place where you can pop in for a pint and a chat or you can enjoy a world-class meal.
Steve has had a passion for cooking for as long as he can remember. He started working in a local hotel when he was just 15 years old and has never looked back. After training at Blackburn College, he went on to work in some of the North West’s best restaurants before opening Freemasons in 2009, where he instantly became known as an open and energetic manager.
For a chef who sees accolades as a bonus, Steve is certainly making his mark in the industry. In 2011 Steve was awarded the Best Newcomer award at The Publican awards and Freemason’s ranked Top 15 Gastropubs in the UK. He was also proud to be invited to work alongside some of best chefs at the London Restaurant Festival and was selected as one of the eight ‘visionaries’.
Steve has never been one for following the crowd and has instead blazed his own trail in every area of his career.
