Freemasons is a multi-award-winning pub located in the picturesque North West village of Wiswell, where amazing food is served in an elegant and relaxed rural setting. It is currently the holder of 3AA Rosettes and was named the AA’s 2017 Restaurant of the Year for England.
The pub was named after the ‘Freemasons Lodge’ which was one of the three cottages that now makes up the inn. Featuring flagstone floors, muted walls, period paintings and antiques rugs, Freemasons is the embodiment of a comfortable, cosy, country pub – 'a home from home'.
Since its transformation and re-opening in 2009, with Steve Smith taking over as the Chef Owner, it has attracted a very impressive local following, with more and more visitors coming from afar to soak up the pub’s atmosphere but mainly to enjoy Steve’s diverse and seasonal menu. He and his team create modern adaptations of traditional favourites, combining both good home cooking with fine dining - a true gastronomic experience. As well as the amazing food, the bar showcases an eclectic selection of traditional cask ales from award-winning breweries, also beneath its floors is a fantastic cellar stocked with over 250 wines from around the world.
The Freemasons has been inundated with industry acclaim. Recently, it retained its status as the UK’s best pub in the Waitrose Good Food Guide, for the second year running and retained its top five spot in the Estrella Damm Top 50 Gastropubs awards, finishing in fourth place, placing it top in Lancashire and the North West. It also featured on Restaurant Magazine’s 2019 Top 100 Restaurants in the UK.
The pub is always evolving. In June 2019, Steve launched ‘Mr Smiths’, an innovative new kitchen space where you can be right In the middle of all the action. Here, Steve offers intimate dinners, ‘Chef of the Day’ experiences and Cookery Masterclasses. It truly is the ultimate gastronomic experience and an exciting new chapter for Freemasons.
