From Sunday mornings spent baking bread and corned beef pasties with his beloved gran, James’ passion for cooking saw his career begin at just 12 years old, working in a local Italian close to home. James’ career steadily progressed and soon he was working under the guidance of Richard Lyth, before heading up the Crown at Whitebrook which was awarded a Michelin Star under his direction.
It didn’t take long for the world to take notice of James’ talent, with the Observer marking him as a Chef to Watch in 2008. His potential was truly unleashed in 2009 when he won the Welsh regional final of BBC2’s Great British Menu.
In 2014 he achieved his long term ambition of opening his own restaurant with ‘James Sommerin’ opening in May to critical acclaim. The Times describes the restaurant as “wow” and a “first rate dining experience”. In 2015 the Michelin Guide praised the restaurants panoramic views over the Severn Estuary and the food’s “unusual taste and texture combinations.” James has an army of celebrity fans too, with well-known faces such Eva Longoria and Jack Whitehall having dined there.
Priding himself and his team on providing a superb fine dining experience to remember, James’ surprise tasting menu encourages diners to leave their dining experience ‘in James hands’ and ‘put the kitchen to the test’. His skilled team create a bespoke menu for each and every table, taking requests on dishes from the menu.
Through a seamless combination of the finest locally sourced produce cooked to perfection with superb presentation, along with the warming hospitality of his team, the James Sommerin Restaurant currently holds 4AA Rosettes and is listed as number 34 in the 2017 Good Food Guide, in addition to its Michelin Star.
