James Mackenzie and his wife Kate are the couple behind the Pipe and Glass; receiving East Yorkshire’s first Michelin star. James’ cooking philosophy is to match the very best ingredients from the areas that surround his home county. He and Kate have an unwavering commitment to sourcing the very best ingredients from local suppliers and this extends to collaborating with a local brewery to produce their own beer, Two Chefs Ale, which is served in the Pipe and Glass as well as being exported.
James’ career in hospitality began at just thirteen years old, working evenings after school and weekends in a busy kitchen near his childhood home in Filey, North Yorkshire. And it didn’t take long for James to rise through the ranks; he quickly went on to work in some of the country’s leading restaurants. This included a spell at the Star Inn, under the direction of fellow Michelin starred Northerner, and long-time friend, Andrew Pern.
Named as the Craft Guild of Chefs Dining Pub/Restaurant Chef of the Year in 2016, James has become a television regular. His debut cookbook ‘On the Menu’ was released in 2012 to critical acclaim and won best debut cookbook at the prestigious Gourmand World Cookbook Awards in Paris. He has also contributed to several cookbooks with his signature style of British cooking, using as much local and seasonal produce as much as possible.
Encouraging young people from a wider range of backgrounds to consider a career in a kitchen is another of James’ passions. To achieve this aim and give back to the profession he has started his own competition, The Golden Apron, aimed at 14-19 year olds who may be considering a career in catering. Offering a once in a lifetime opportunity to be mentored by a Michelin starred chef, the competition has been running since 2014 and has attracted national attention.
