April has been a great month here at Goodfellows at Home! We rejoiced over all things spring (the produce and the tableware) and we also celebrated James Mackenzie as our Chef of the Month! If you follow us on social media, you would have noticed us sharing all sorts of information about James, from his recipes to what tableware he is using at his restaurant. So it seemed right to round it all up with a blog! Read on to find out how it all started for James and how him and his wife transformed a pub into a renowned foodie destination…

James’ career in hospitality began at just thirteen years old, working evenings after school and weekends in a busy kitchen near his childhood home in Filey, North Yorkshire. It didn’t take long for James to rise through the ranks; he quickly went on to work in some of the country’s leading restaurants. This included a spell at the Star Inn, under the direction of fellow Michelin starred Northerner, and long-time friend, Andrew Pern (who he has also created a beer with, called ‘Two Chefs Ale’ which can be found all over the world!).

Now James is Chef Owner of the Pipe and Glass in Dalton. He and his wife Kate took over the Pipe and Glass in 2006 and rapidly transformed it into the warm, welcoming and award-winning pub that it is today. James runs the kitchen, Kate runs the Front of House and their children Toby and Molly run rings around everyone! It really is a family affair, which only adds to the relaxed and ‘homely’ feel of the pub.

Located on the site of the original gatehouse to Dalton Park on the beautiful Dalton Estate, the Pipe and Glass building is soaked in history, with parts of the current building dating back to the 17th century!! As you can see from the images, it is picture perfect (a dream for all of you Instagram lovers!)

A lot of hard work went into transforming the Pipe and Glass. James and Kate did a major refurbishment in 2006 and continue to improve the premises regularly, including an exclusive private dining suite, three new accommodation rooms and a beautiful kitchen garden.

As well as a beautiful restaurant, bar and garden, the pub is home to five luxury rooms, which are tastily decorated with a luxury, boutique feel. Actually, the accommodation is so popular that James and Kate recently added more rooms, from two to five! All rooms are made extra special by being located in the lovely gardens at the rear of the Pipe and Glass, so you feel like you are in your own little world.

If you have ever visited the Pipe and Glass, you will understand how it was awarded a Michelin Star within its first 4 years of opening, which it proudly still holds today. Many more accolades swiftly followed, including The Good Pub Guide’s National Dining Pub of the Year 2015, and was placed at Number Four in the National Morning Advertiser. Budweiser Budvar Top 50 gastropubs for 2013 and 2014 and at Number Three in 2015.

The restaurant is favoured by celebrities and locals alike! The airy, elegant and welcoming surroundings make it the perfect place to relax and enjoy James’ award-wining food or you can just pop along for a drink and a chat in the cosy bar! From light-bites in the bar to the full Michelin Star experience, there is something for everyone on the menu.

It is no surprise that people travel from far and wide to get their own little slice of the Pipe and Glass and why people keep going back for more. We can’t wait to see what James and Kate plan to do with the pub next! In the meantime, check out James’ Goodfellows at Home profile here.
